What happened to the Soviet Union in World War II?

Soviet Union

-          Russian Revolution in 1917.
-          Joseph Stalin gained complete control of the Soviet Union in1928.
-          The five year plans were introduced and the government took control of the economy
o   Collectivized land ended all the private ownership of land. State farms were introduced.
o     Their was an investment of the construction in the heavy industry, he did this in order to build a military that would be able to defend the Soviet Union.
o   Introduced the Great Terror in the 1930’s anyone who was his enemy was lost their lives.  To show that he had complete control over anyone.
-          In 1934 Stalin joined the League of Nations, but it was severely limited in its ability to promote peace.
o   Stalin would promote collective security as best as he could.
-          In August 1939 Stalin signed the NAZI- Soviet Peace Pact.
-          British and the US went to Stalin and informed Moscow that Germany was planning on invading the Soviet Union.
o   Stalin refused to listen and thought that because of the non aggression pact Germany would never declare war on the USSAR.
o   War was declared on June 22 1941, by Germany.
o   On June 22nd 1941 Hitler broke the NAZI-Soviet Pace by initiating Operation Barbarossa which was a massive invasion of the Soviet Union.
§  Hitler wanted the destruction of Communism, therefore wanting the control of the Soviet Union.
·         Wanted the Soviets Union to provide living space for the German people.
·         In addition to all this their was also a vast amount of resources that Germany Desperately needed, in order to fight World War II.
·         Essentially Hitler wanted to destroy the ideological arch rival communism.
§  Hitler however underestimated Stalin for Stalin had over 3 times as many troops.
o   In 1942 Hitler was 40 miles away from Moscow, but could not proceed any farther due to inadequate weather conditions.  It was very cold and Hitler thought he would defeat Stalin by the end of summer, so he did not provide his troops with winter clothing.  Hitler however did not blame himself but rather his commanders for this fault in the plan.
§  Firing mechanisms seized up and the oil frozen in the tank engines.  This stopped the German advance.  Many of the German solider froze to death during this period of time
